Our UBP course is designed for students wishing to attend an English-speaking post-secondary institution. Students work on general and academic English skills as well as post-secondary-specific skills such as research and referencing. On passing UBP, students may proceed directly to one of our pathway institutions or apply to any other post-secondary program. Students work on general and academic English skills as well as post-secondary-specific skills such as research and referencing. On passing UBP, students may proceed directly to one of our pathway institutions or apply to any other post-secondary program. This program is eigh t weeks, with 25 hours of teacher contact time per week. Students must pass the UBP entrance test to take this course. Halifax has large university and family populations, with strict laws against violence, harassment and discrimination. HLIC upholds these standards on campus and all HLIC students are expected to abide by local laws while they study in Canada. As an international student in Canada you are required to have Health Insurance. HLIC has chosen the most reputable, feasible and accessible Health Insurance provider for students as our service provider. Health & Safety Health Insurance in Canada As an international student in Canada you are required to have Health Insurance. HLIC has chosen the most reputable, feasible and accessible Health Insurance provider for students as our service provider. Your Health fee will be approximately $2 CAD a day and will cover your health needs including doctor and hospital visits, prescription medication (up to a 30 day supply), and emergency hospital visits and transportation. Safety in Halifax Halifax has large university and family populations, with strict laws against violence, harassment and discrimination. If you are unsure about what actions to take or need language support please consult with HLIC for guidance. Alcohol The legal drinking age in Canada is 19 years old. You cannot enter a bar or buy alcohol if you are not 19. If you are caught providing alcohol for people under 19 (including hosting a party with underage guests) you can face serious punishment. You cannot drink alcohol in public at any age. You cannot be overly intoxicated in public. NEVER DRINK AND DRIVE Tobacco and Cannabis (Marijuana) The legal age to use and buy nicotine or cannabis products is 19 years old. If you are caught providing nicotine or cannabis products for people under 19 (including hosting a party with underage guests) you can face serious punishment. Smoking is prohibited in public spaces including indoors (including restaurants, bars, shops, public streets, parks). If you choose to smoke please do so at designated smoking areas or on approved private property. Cannabis is legal in Canada. Any person may use cannabis in the same areas where tobacco is approved. Cannabis is legal to purchase from government-approved locations. It is illegal to purchase cannabis from individuals. Relationships NEVER HAVE A SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH ANY PERSON UNDER THE AGE OF 16 (if you are 19+). This includes dating, sending or receiving sexual texts/emails & photos. NEVER inappropriately touch someone without their consent. This includes at bars and parties you attend. If someone says NO, ‘I don’t feel like it’, ‘I’m not comfortable’ etc OR is overly intoxicated/asleep NEVER touch or force sexual actions. This is considered rape and is taken VERY seriously. General Behaviour You cannot urinate in public. You cannot use hateful/discriminatory language against people (ie: racism, sexism, homophobia, negative stereotyping about a person’s country of origin, religion, sexual identity, etc). Theft of any amount, from a business or person, is a crime. Destruction of property, public or private, is a crime.

Our Study Holiday program is best for tourists who also wish to study English for 1 to 4 weeks. This program is best for students who that are not planning to attend college or university in Canada. Home / Housing / Homestay Homestay Program Offering safe, comfortable, and affordable accommodation, HLIC homestays are an effective way to truly experience Canadian culture, while furthering language learning. Each homestay offers a private, comfortable room, including a desk, bed, closet, and linens. The student will have access to common spaces, a shared kitchen, a bathroom, and laundry facilities. Homestay fees include heat, hot water, and internet. Our homestays are the perfect complement to HLIC student enrolment, offering the student a unique chance to learn and practice their English outside of school, at home, with native-speaking locals. Each homestay has at least one responsible host who will oversee the student’s daily life, and strive to include the student in their Canadian customs, local festivals, holidays, traditions, food, and social activities. The HLIC screening process requires hosts to undergo a home inspection and pass rigorous security checks, including up-to-date criminal record checks and vulnerable sector checks. HLIC keeps in regular contact with our hosts and students to ensure standards are being met. Our homestays are affordable, costing $1150.00 CAD per month, which includes 3 meals a day, heating, water and internet. There is an initial $200.00 non-refundable application fee, and a $400.00 refundable damage deposit fee. All homestays are accessible within a maximum of 30 minutes of driving by car, or 1 hour by bus. Some homestays are within walking distance. In the Classroom Inclusivity starts at the top of any organization. We provide our staff with training and materials to support them in supporting our students. In the classroom teachers create an inclusive space by including LGBTQ2SIA+ learning materials & topics with an emphasis on understanding and representation. At HLIC, we have a 0-tolerance bullying policy. We give our students the knowledge and language tools they need to express their ideas and opinions, including teaching why some words/phrases and views are hurtful. With our smaller class sizes, teachers are able to build strong relationships with their students and ensure a safe and inclusive classroom environment. Students will find a variety of LGBTQ2SIA+ material proudly displayed in the common areas and classrooms at HLIC. Through their lessons, the teachers will draw on LGBTQ2SIA+ topics, teach gender-neutral language and make sure every student feels welcomed, safe and heard. In the Community Social issues, social justice, and global human rights are at the core of HLIC’s school culture. We act on these beliefs by regularly engaging with local organizations, rallies, events, non-profits, and guest speakers.

I have read, understood and agree to the Waiver of Liability * Required Yes Parental Agreement HLIC agrees to notify the parent/guardian whenever the child becomes ill and the parent/guardian will arrange to have the child picked up as soon as possible if requested by the HLIC. The parent/guardian agrees to inform the HLIC within 24 hours or the next business day after his child or any members of the immediate household has developed a reportable communicable. The parent/guardian agrees to refrain from sending the possibly ill child to HLIC, and understands that if a child shows symptoms of illness, the parent/guardian will be called to have the child removed from camp. The parent/guardian authorizes the application of sunscreen and/or insect repellent for his/her child by HLIC staff. Late pick-up: If a parent/guardian/Authorized pick-up person is unable to pick up the child from HLIC by 5:00 PM each day, they agree to call HLIC staff to inform them. Failure to call when late will result in HLIC staff calling ALL of the child's Parents/Guardians and Authorized Pick-Up Contacts. If HLIC cannot reach any adult (that is listed in the child's registration form) by phone at the time of pick-up, and no adult has contacted HLIC regarding the child's pickup, authorities may be called. I have read, understood and agree to the Parental Agreement * Required Yes Cancellation and Refund Agreement: Cancellation (withdrawing the child from the camp) must be made at least 2 weeks in advance of the camp start date. No refunds will be made for cancellations within 2 weeks before the start of the camp week or after the start date has passed. I have read, understood and agree to the Cancellation and Refund Agreement: * Required Yes Registration Agreement: I understand that I must pay the camp fee ($600 per 2-week camp) for my child to be registered in a camp. I understand that until a payment is made, my child is not registered in the camp/cannot participate in the camp. If a payment is not made, the registration is considered invalid. An email with payment instructions will be sent when this registration form is submitted. Payments can be made by PayPal, or in person at the HLIC office (1969 Upper Water Street, Purdy's Wharf Tower II) by cash, debit or credit card.
